Vitamin D and Your Fertility

Vitamin D and Fertility

Living on the Gold Coast 15 years ago, testing Vitamin D wasn’t highest on my priority list for the first tests to check that had been done because most people had really great levels of sun exposure. Moving to the Middle East and working with clients where many people had to avoid the sun because of it’s extreme heat or covering for cultural reasons, Vitamin D became much more important to test. Now, in 2020, many of my clients from the Southern parts of Australia have already had their Vitamin D levels checked but also many people even in other parts of Australia are avoiding the sun and so it’s still importnant to test.

Vitamin D is essential to have checked when you’re trying to conceive- not just because it can impact your own health when it’s low but because it plays a role in the immne system which is important for implantation when you’re tying to conceive. Vitamin D also acts like a hormone on the body and so can have a direct impact on your mental and physical health as well as your fertility. A 2018 Meta Analysis showed that women lower vitamin D levels had a trend towards lower clinical pregnancy rates.

Vitamin D is also critical for your baby’s healthy development once you’re pregnant so optimising these levels before you get pregnant is best.

When I look at Vitamin D results I look at them from optimal- which means I want the levels to be in the best possible range to support your health and your future baby’s health (which by the way- your future baby’s health into adulthood can be impacted upon by your Vitamin D levels early in your pregnancy).

My 3 steps to making sure your Vitamin D levels are supporting your Fertility and also the future health of your baby is to :

1.       ASSESS Vitamin D from optimal (with me or with your own practitioner ideally 3 months prior to trying to conceive and definitely before you go in for any Assisted Reproductive Techniques. This doesn’t mean that you’re not deficient- it means I want to see them within optimal reference ranges.

2.       CORRECT your Vitamin D levels before IUI or IVF and if you’re trying naturally, get started on correcting them ASAP. Remember this beautiful Vitamin is also really important for your overall health and wellbeing,

3.       MAINTAIN optimal levels of Vitamin D throughout your pregnancy and postpartum.
